The Muhlenberg AEDY Program
-
The Muhlenberg AEDY program operates inside Muhlenberg High School. The Muhlenberg AEDY program accepts students from grades 6-12. Students in AEDY receive a small teacher-to-student ratio to ensure their success with a greater individualized approach. Special education students and English Language Learners assigned to AEDY receive support from qualified special education and ESL teachers.
Academics
Students placed in AEDY are enrolled in online virtual academic programming to receive their education. Online coursework is aligned to the student's regular course of studies, by the student's school counselor, to ensure learning and credits are not sacrificed. Students are assisted with their online coursework by both virtual instructors and in-house teachers.
Counseling
Students in AEDY receive 2-1/2 hours of counseling per week. Counseling may be delivered in individual or group settings.
- The purpose of counseling is to remediate the behavior(s) that caused the placement in the AEDY Program and to help the student to transition back to the regular setting.
- The 2.5 hours of counseling per week must be provided in addition to the required hours of academic instruction. It is recommended that the 2.5 hours of weekly counseling take place in a small group or individual format.
- AEDY LEA In-house Programs and AEDY Private Provider Programs are responsible for maintaining an up-to-date counseling record. The counseling record should include, at a minimum, student attendance, group topics, name of the counselor leading the group, the date, and the start and stop times of the group session.
- As of July 1, 2019, individuals delivering counseling services must hold one of the following credentials and should have experience in providing services to students in the appropriate age range: certified school counselor, certified school psychologist, certified school social worker, certified drug and alcohol counselor (as appropriate), licensed social worker, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor, certified/licensed therapist, licensed psychologist or psychiatrist.
AEDY Placement Duration
Students are typically assigned to AEDY in 45-day increments. Exiting AEDY is contingent on the initial behavior(s) and personal goals achieved. Goals typically address three areas: (a) behavior, (b) attendance and (c) academics.
AEDY Goals
In addition to any other tailored, personal goals, all students assigned to the Muhlenberg AEDY program are expected to achieve success in three goal areas:
- Academics - Students are expected to work on assigned virtual lessons on a regular, daily basis, maintaining adequate progress and grades.
- Attendance - Students are expected to improve their attendance and tardiness compared to past patterns in regular school.
- Behavior - Students are expected to make better choices and be free from any disruptive behaviors.
Any goal not met could influence a student's opportunity to exit the Muhlenberg AEDY program.
AEDY School Day
The school day for students in the Muhlenberg AEDY program runs from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Students are expected to arrive by 8:00 am and are dismissed at 2:00 pm.
Transportation
Students that qualify for regular school transportation are eligible to receive door-to-door transportation to/from AEDY. Students that do not qualify for regular school transportation have the option of walking to AEDY.
Meals
Students in the Muhlenberg AEDY program have breakfast and lunch delivered to them each day.
Cell Phones
Students are not permitted to use cell phones during the course of the day. Cell phone use can be permitted for limited times with the explicit permission of the AEDY teachers as part of the student's positive behavior incentive.
Transition Back to Regular Education
All students in AEDY are afforded the opportunity to transition back to regular school that is tailored to their needs. Transition periods can serve from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
- Students with IEPs must complete their transition BEFORE or ON the 45th day of AEDY placement.
- All students with IEPs must begin regular school, in full, the school day after the 45th day of AEDY placement.
- Students without IEPs will begin their transition AFTER the 45th day of their AEDY placement.
