• School Attendance Improvement Conferences

Once your child misses a certain amount of school, you will receive a letter in the mail informing you of your child's absences. This first letter is sent after your child has accumulated three (3) unexcused absences. This letter is mainly to inform you of the absences and warn you of the risks of missing school.

A second letter is sent after your child has had six (6) unexcused absences. At this point, they are considered "habitually truant". This time, the letter will provide you with the date and time of a School Attendance Improvement Conference (SAIC). At the SAIC, the parents and school counselor (and other staff as needed) will work together to create a Student Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP). The point of the SAIP is to identify any barriers that are causing the child to miss school and work to find a solution. This letter also warns of what could happen should your child continue to miss school. The plan will then be sent home in the mail to both the parent and the child.

A similar letter will be sent once a student misses ten (10) or more days of school. At this point, it does not matter if the absences are excused or unexcused. (Please note: all absences from this point forward will require a doctor's note in order to be excused.) A SAIP will again be completed. It should also be noted that, if the family does not arrive to the SAIC, the meeting will be held without them. If improvement in attendance is not achieved following these meetings, the following actions could take place:

    • A citation could be filed with the Magisterial District Judge, which may result in a fine, community service, or loss of driver's license
    • The family could be referred to the Advancing School Attendance Program through SAM
    • The family could be referred to Children and Youth Services

Ultimately, the goal of any attendance meeting is to remove any future barriers to ensure your child is getting to school on time and ready to learn. Together, we can make this happen!
