Extra Credit Options
Students may do two of the following extra credit projects each quarter to earn bonus points to boost their grade. Extra credit assignments are not mandatory and must be done in the correct format with all requirements met to receive any extra points._______________________________________________________________________________________________Local History Extra Credit OptionFor extra credit students may do the following extra credit assignment for up to 15 points one time per quarter. A one paragraph (6-8 sentence) essay should be handed in describing the historical significance of a historical site in the state of Pennsylvania. Along with the one paragraph essay a brochure must also be handed in to prove that the student was at the physical site. All historical locations not specifically listed on this website must be approved by the teacher prior to starting the assignment if the student wants to receive credit.
Locations for this assignment include but are not limited to the following:
- Daniel Boone Homestead
- Conrad Weiser Homestead
- Valley Forge National Park
- Gettysburg National Park
- Hopewell Furnace
- Independence Hall
- Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center
- Berks County Historical Society
- The Ephrata Cloister
Points awarded will be determined by how well the essay covers the importance of the site to both Pennsylvania and U.S. history. Essays with excessive amounts of grammar mistakes or essays not written in a formal matter will not be accepted.

Felix Dam Extra Credit OptionFor extra credit you may complete the Local History Extra Credit Worksheet and hand it in. This worksheet requires you to be at the site where the Felix Dam once stood. This is a township owned park right off of River Road. The purpose of this project is for the participating students to become more aware of our local history right here in Muhlenberg. The Schuylkill River played a vital role in the development of Berks County and the entire state.
To answer the questions on the worksheet you will need to use the parks historical and geological attributes. Many of the questions are also discussed on the historical placards which are placed periodically along the trail.
So have fun, be safe, enjoy the natural setting and earn some extra credit all at the same time. The Schuylkill is a great place to relax, take the dog for a walk and even learn a little more about Muhlenberg's history. I encourage all students to go to the park with a parent/guardian or a group of friends for safety and to go during park hours.
