    Courses

    The Music Department offers a program of studies for the student who plans to enter a music or music-related field as well as the student who wants to gain an understanding of the fine art of music. The department also provides the opportunity for each student to attain instrumental and vocal performing competence through a variety of performing organizations.

    MAJOR MUSIC I

    This is a major course that encompasses the four disciplines of music

    1. music theory (harmony & analysis)
    2. sight singing
    3. dictation (interval recognition and hearing & writing melodies) and
    4. history (starting with chant).

    This course is designed for students deeply interested in music, students who plan a career in a music-related field or students interested in the field of elementary education.

    MAJOR MUSIC II

    This is a continuation of the Major Music I course.

    MAJOR MUSIC III

    This is a continuation of the Major Music II course.

    MAJOR MUSIC IV

    This is a continuation of the Major Music III course. This course concludes with an AP Music Theory and Sight-Singing Exam.

    MIXED CHORUS

    This is a non-select chorus which rehearses twice a cycle during school hours and requires a sectional rehearsal during three separate cycles as well as some out-of-school rehearsal time. This chorus prepares and performs a variety of four-to-six part music with emphasis on elementary and intermediate music reading and vocal production.

    CONCERT CHORUS

    This is a select chorus which rehearses twice a cycle during school hours and requires one sectional rehearsal during five separate cycles as well as some out-of-school rehearsal time. This chorus prepares and performs a variety of four to eight part music with emphasis on intermediate and advanced music reading and vocal production.

    BLUE BAND

    This is a non-select band which rehearses three times a cycle during school hours and requires one sectional per cycle and some out-of-school rehearsal time. The band prepares and performs a variety of marching and concert band music and provides music for parades, half-time shows, and other sports and concert events.

    SPOILERS - JAZZ BAND

    This is a select jazz band, which rehearses both on and off school time. The group plays a variety of jazz styles, and performs at concerts and jazz festivals throughout the spring of the year.
