• Math Fact Fluency

Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic math facts automatically and without hesitation. Fact fluency is gained through significant practice, with mastery of basic math facts being a goal of both teachers and parents. Math facts are important because they form the building blocks for higher-level math concepts. When a child masters his/her math facts, these concepts will be significantly easier and the student will be better equipped to solve them faster.

**Fourth graders are expected to know their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts in fourth grade. Your child has been practicing these math facts throughout elementary school.  Each year there has been a benchmark they were expected to meet.

We will practice math fact fluency in class for students that have not yet mastered their math facts.  We will use Xtramath as a practice tool.  This program allows students to work at their individual instructional level.

There are many ways in which you can give your child practice their math fact fluency:

    • Expand your Number Wall into a Fact Fluency Wall: Prominently place math facts, especially facts your child is having difficulty remembering on a magnetic surface, whiteboard, bulletin board or other area. As your child memorizes the math facts, include them on your fact fluency wall.
    • Songs: Sing songs that help your child memorize math facts.
    • Flash cards: Give your child extra practice with math facts by practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication flash cards.
    • Writing Activities: Offer your child the opportunity to write the math facts they know or need to practice.
    • Playing Online Learning Games: There are many websites that have games to practice math fact fluency.
