About Our Superintendent
Dr. Alan S. Futrick was appointed Superintendent of the Muhlenberg School District in May 2025 and officially assumed the role on January 1, 2026. After serving the Muhlenberg community for the past 12 years as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Futrick is honored and excited to lead the district he proudly calls home. His leadership is grounded in strong relationships, collaboration, and a deep commitment to student-centered decision-making. Known for his energy, optimism, and ability to unite people around a shared vision, Dr. Futrick looks forward to building upon Muhlenberg’s successes while continuing to strengthen a supportive, innovative, and inclusive learning environment for students, staff, families, and the broader community.
As Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Futrick has helped lead our district with an energy and enthusiasm that has been highly contagious. His ability to inspire and motivate people toward a common goal is the culmination of his focus on relationships and collaboration. Cultivating an optimistic spirit with teachers, parents, students and community members to build consensus for district initiatives and while establishing an encouraging and supportive culture. His student-centered approach has yielded positive outcomes for the Muhlenberg School District.
Dr. Futrick has led several initiatives that have helped improve the educational programming, experiences and opportunities for the students of the Muhlenberg School District. Some of the most critical initiatives have been in the areas of Mental Health, Literacy, STEM and 21st century teaching and learning. MSD has made tremendous strides with equipping staff and students with cutting edge technology, rigorous curriculum, and meaningful professional development. Those resources have allowed MSD to make significant improvements in the areas of Literacy and STEM, garnering national recognition and attention.
Most recently, Muhlenberg High School was designated as a National STANDOUT School by Niche.com. Additionally, Muhlenberg High School was recognized as One of the BEST High Schools in the country by US News & World Reports. This past summer, CNN chronicled the impact our Summer programming has had on building relationships and student engagement.
Before coming to Muhlenberg, Dr. Futrick was the Principal at Bridgeport Elementary School in the Upper Merion Area School District; Principal at Southern Middle School and Glenside Elementary School in the Reading School District. Dr. Futrick’s documented history of academic success can be traced back to his days as a Principal. In 2013-14, his school had one of the highest SPP scores in Pennsylvania when compared with schools of similar demographic make-up (60% or more Economically Disadvantaged). In 2010, U.S. Congressman Joe Sestak presented his school with a "Special Congressional Recognition" certificate for outstanding academic achievement, community service, and patriotism. Additionally, The Montgomery County Times Herald (2008) selected his school as "One of the Best" schools in Montgomery County. His schools have been recognized as Distinguished Title I Schools by the Pennsylvania Department of Education on two occasions.
