7th Grade
(Six sessions per cycle for 1 quarter) Individual students learn to manage the challenges of living and working in society. Emphasis will be on financial and resource management as well as balancing family, work and community responsibilities. Students also construct a gym bag. This project teaches a variety of sewing techniques, how to follow directions, as well as assess the effectiveness of teamwork and leadership skills.
8th Grade
(Six sessions per cycle for 1 quarter) Students explore topics such as kitchen and food safety, measuring techniques, kitchen equipment, the Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines, food labels, meal planning and a unit on child care. These topics are covered using a number of hands-on activities including posters, presentations and food preparation labs. Healthy food choices are stressed in each lesson, with an emphasis on the Food Guide Pyramid. Students are encouraged to express their thoughts, opinions and facts learned in their daily journal writings.
