Career Center

The Career Center offers a variety of services to the students of Muhlenberg High School.  Students may come to the Career Center to explore careers, colleges, technical schools, military options, financial aid options for attending college, scholarship searches, part-time job information, create a resume and cover letter, SAT/ACT preparation, obtain applications for colleges or fill one out online, and to set up a job shadowing experience. Selective service and voter registration is also available in the Career Center.

If you need personal assistance Mrs. Burnham is in the Career Center to assist you with all your Career Exploration needs.

Financial Aid

At the beginning of each school year, many organizations that provide scholarships for seniors and send their information to us.  On the first Friday of each month a list of these scholarships are provided to each senior during homeroom period.  Students can come to Guidance to obtain the proper paperwork to apply for these.  Students at any time may stop by Guidance for updated scholarships at any time.

Student Assistance Program

Today all schools have what is called Student Assistance Programs, a collection of school-based and/or intervention services that help students with their personal problems and encourage them to build on their strengths so that they are able to attend school regularly and be academically successful. The Muhlenberg S.A.P. Team is focused on many different issues that impact student achievement. Some of these issues are as follows: 

  • Substance abuse prevention and intervention
  • Violence prevention
  • Eating disorders
  • Grief and loss
  • Divorce in family
  • Youth suicide
  • Crisis management
  • Character development

Who is on the S.A.P. Team?

The Muhlenberg S.A.P. team consists of teachers, counselors, and administrators who have been trained to assist students who are experiencing difficulties.

How to get your child into S.A.P.

If you suspect your child or any other student is :

  • Using alcohol
  • Using drugs
  • Is having personal problems

If any of these issues are interfering with his or her performance in school, use the referral form and the S.A.P team will assist the child. Don’t let problems become barriers to learning and success in school.

Message to Parents

  • Are your child's grades slipping?
  • Is your child violent or apathetic?
  • Is your child having difficulty handling family issues or emotional distress?
  • Is your child dealing with unhealthy peer pressure?
  • Is your child using drugs or alcohol?

If your child exhibits any of the above, please call the high school and ask to speak to any member of the S.A.P. Team.

Groups

Another function of the S.A.P. program is to implement groups at our School. If you feel your son or daughter would benefit from participating in a group, please let us know.

Focus of the groups vary depending on student need/interest:

  • Grief and loss
  • Drug and alcohol
  • Smoking  cessation
  • Pregnancy
  • Anger management
  • Time management

Graduation Requirements

Beginning with the class of 2009, for a student to be eligible for graduation the student shall:

  • Demonstrate mastery of academic standards as defined by Chapter 4,  “Curriculum” from the State Board of Education Regulations, PA School Code.
  • Complete a minimum 24.32 credits of instruction as defined below.
  • Complete the Culminating/Graduation project according to approved district guidelines.
  • Complete all other requirements developed in conjunction with PA Dept. of Education regulations or as approved by the Muhlenberg School District and presented in district publications.

The process for fulfilling the above requirements is as follows:

  • Academic Standards - Students must successfully master the content embedded in the high school planned courses, which are developed in accordance with the Pennsylvania academic standards approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. Course descriptions are obtainable from the High School Curriculum Guide revised on a yearly basis and available in the high school Guidance Office or on the school district web site. Complete copies of the curriculum for each course are available in the main office at the high school.
  • Course/Credit Requirements - Students shall accumulate a minimum of 24.32 Credits for the applicable program of studies from the following subject areas:

Full Time/Home School Students

English - 4 credits
Social Studies - 4 credits
Mathematics – 4 credits
Science - 4 credits
Arts/Humanities - 2 credits
Health – 0.75 credits
Driver Education – 0.25 credits
Family and Consumer Science – 0.25 credits

Graduation Project (class of 2011) – 0.50 credits

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

At the high school level, you earn credit for each course passed with the goal of reaching the appropriate number of credits for graduation. A 9th grade student must earn a minimum of 5 credits prior to the start of the following school year to be considered a 10th grade student. A 10th grade student must earn a minimum of 10.75 credits prior to the start of the following school year to be considered an 11th grade student. An 11th grade student must earn a minimum of 17.25 credits prior to the start of the following school year to be considered a 12th grade student. These updated promotion requirements will begin with the class of 2009.
