The business education program offers many valuable opportunities for the non-business major. For those who plan to major in some field of business in college, a rudimentary background in accounting and data processing would be a valuable asset. For all students, regardless of their career intentions, there are a number of courses that would prove valuable.
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT I & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT II
Business Management is a seminar course for the academic student planning a career in business, as well as for career preparatory students planning to enter the business world after high school or continue on in a business/technical school. This multi-faceted course covers various topics, some tailored to individual interests of students. It includes entrepreneurial techniques, oral and written communication, job search and application techniques, and various business management skills. Field experiences and outside speakers, as well as the use of student projects to simulate the business world, are an integral part of the curriculum.
BASIC ACCOUNTING
Basic Accounting is an introduction to the accounting cycle as it pertains to a single proprietorship and partnership for both service and merchandising business. Clerical and analytical skills are developed for recording entries in various journals, keeping ledgers, payroll, preparing worksheets and various financial reports.
ADVANCED ACCOUNTING
This is a one-year course that further develops skills from in Basic Accounting. It teaches students how to keep the records of a partnership and corporation. Topics include departmental accounting, payroll, accounting control systems, updating accounts by adjustment, corporate accounting (stocks, bonds, and dividends) and cost accounting. Advanced computerized accounting is an integral part of this course.
PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING
Financial planning and self-management skills for the future will be the focus of the course. Areas of study will include planning for educational expenses, personal and household budgeting, taxes, banking, investing, insurance, credit procedures, rights and responsibilities of consumers, and long-range financial planning. Students will be exposed to commercial software applications and internet tools to help enhance their management skills.
DESKTOP PUBLISHING
Develop skills needed in today's workplace by learning desktop publishing. Learn how to combine text, graphs, pictures, and different fonts into documents that look like a publication specialist has done them. Create resumes, flyers, reports, brochures, newsletters, and a variety of other documents. In addition to learning the hardware and software, document design will be emphasized. This is a valuable skill that can give students an edge over other employees in an office environment, in a career that requires writing, or a career in graphic arts. The instructional focus is learning by doing. This course can be taken for credit more than one year. We recommend completing a word processing course prior to scheduling Desktop Publishing.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMING
This course is designed to be the student's first course in computer programming. It will emphasize the development cycle as a means of creating applications and will provide students with a strong introduction to object-oriented design and programming techniques. Students will learn to write well-written and readable programs using a disciplined coding style, including documentation and indentation standards found in the industry. It will use practical problems to illustrate application-building techniques.
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
This course gives the student the opportunity to use a personal computer to become familiar with the various applications in Microsoft Office: Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint, & Publisher. Students will learn the basic principles and operations of the software Suite as well as specific skill sets associated with each application within Microsoft Office. This course will prepare the students to take the Core MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist) exam in Word, Access, and Excel.
