photoAbout Us

The Muhlenberg Elementary Center (MEC) is one of the largest, most diverse elementary schools in the state of Pennsylvania and the largest in Berks County.  Dedicated staff members are proud to serve nearly 1200 K–4 students.  Muhlenberg Elementary Center is located in the suburban community of Muhlenberg Township at the corner of Kutztown Road and Sharp Avenue.

At the MEC, all students learn from high-impact instruction and constant developmentally-rich experiences.  Coupled with the standards-aligned core curriculum, students are taught appropriate social skills through the High Five and “Cool Muhl” initiative.  In addition to the challenging core curriculum and social skills program, certified teachers also offer students instruction in Art, Music, Library, Physical Education and Computer Skills.

To meet students’ special needs, MEC has numerous special education teachers and assistants as well as speech and occupational therapists, guidance counselors, a home school visitor and school psychologist.  MEC is a Title I school; therefore, remedial reading instruction is available to all students.  Certified teachers and assistants in the Learning Lab and ELL programs provide additional support in Reading/ Language Arts and Math.  Intervention and enrichment programs, as well as guidance support, are offered throughout the school day.  An Elementary Student Assistance Program is available.  Students are encouraged to participate in band and student council, as well as assist in operating and managing the school store.

MEC supports students through a variety of tutoring and mentoring programs.  The Muhlenberg Education Foundation graciously offers their academic support for third grade students.  The United Way facilitates a tutoring program within the school using undergraduate students from local teacher colleges to help tutor second grade students.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters program of Berks County coordinates a mentoring program by assigning a Muhlenberg High School with a MEC student.

The MEC administration, faculty and staff believe that a healthy relationship between the community and our school is fundamental to our educational program. We are proud of our strong community involvement. An active and supportive PTO sponsors a school store, a Holiday Shop, Book Fair, numerous assemblies, and provides thousands of dollars of support to our students and school. Additionally, there is a successful parent volunteer program, welcoming hundreds of parents and family members into our building each year.

Faculty and staff members are committed to working together with students, families and community to continuously improve and achieve success one child at a time. Our students are imparted with an educational experience that fosters a positive attitude toward school, family, community, and self. Our staff of experienced and highly talented teachers strives to provide each student with a solid foundation of the basic skills needed to become life-long learners and contributing members of the community.
